Waiting on the to-do lists of many students is to get their volunteer hours in. Whether this is for their resume or to give back to the community, service hours are on the minds of students.

Unfortunately, volunteering seems daunting. Some may find themselves wondering where to start. Finding resources seems hard, and students may procrastinate their research. For something so important that contributes so much good to the community, shouldn’t there be an easier way to volunteer?

This is where Viking Volunteers come in. Viking Volunteers is a new club at East, and its mission is to make it easier for high school students to access resources, gain useful contacts, participate in fundraising and hosting drives, and ultimately find their way through the intimidating world of volunteering. And all one has to do to take part in this is join the Schoology group.

Once one has joined, they will be informed about opportunities with local organizations and can sign up using links on the Schoology page at their convenience. These can include events or routine volunteering. The information is spread through Schoology updates or listed in the resource section, meaning this club can be as low maintenance as wanted, the members only have to think about it as needed. On the other hand, this club can also be prioritized and worked on a lot. Viking Volunteers hosts two meetings a month, one for planning and checking in and the other one for an activity, such as card making. If someone is looking for an opportunity to help out and become involved, that’s easily done as well, but again, there’s still not much of a commitment.

Although this club is focused around individual work, Viking Volunteers also hosts group activities, projects, and events. As said before, these will be announced through Schoology, but planned at the meetings. These projects may be the fundraisers and drives done in school or larger events with organizations.

The Viking Volunteers club is a great opportunity for anyone looking to become more involved in the community and easily obtain their service hours. The amount of benefits volunteering has is immeasurable, and this is an easy way to access them. If you are interested in joining, you can use the Schoology group code 45MD-KTH7-K7Z5J, and if there are any questions, you can email wcvikingvolunteers@gmail.com.
