Food is a medium of communication throughout all countries. No form of language can connect people as closely as food does. When we come together as people, food is always there to help us relate to each other and share our history and culture. If you think about it, all countries have similar foods that are prepared differently. For example, naan and pita bread, fried rice and biryani, dumplings and ravioli. We all use the same ingredients to make our own variety of cuisine. That’s the beauty of food!

It’s a pleasure to let you know that a teacher in our school has decided to allow students to share delicious flavors from around the world! On Tuesday, December 20th, Mrs. Knox’s classes hosted a Culture Day! To celebrate the culture of students throughout our school, students cooked up delicious cultural foods and served them in room 107!

Here’s what Mrs. Knox has to say about Culture Day:

Why did you decide to have a Culture Day?

So this is something [from] one of my first years teaching. Mr. Busby actually used to do this and I actually took the idea and ran with it because it’s been an excellent opportunity for students to be able to bring in food to represent themselves and for students to be able to experience food items from other cultures.

Do you think food is an important form of communication?

Yes, absolutely! I feel like a lot of us, when we think back on our lives, have specific food items that make us think of a specific time period or a specific place that we traveled, so yes I definitely think that food is an important form of communication.

Do you plan on having more culture days in the years to come?

Yes, so this is the 13th year that I’ve been doing it so I hope to do this for many more years.

A big thanks to Mrs. Knox for letting me talk to her about Culture Day at East! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
